the other volunteers are so great.
last night was the big dinner out since it was the end of (their) in-country training. some of them will now be flying off to their placements in the countryside. two years in nepal!
we went to this really posh hotel, dwarika's. it was incredible to just stand in the courtyard. the place is a tribute to newari architecture and it's absolutely breathtaking(you can read the history here).
anyway, i was taken completely by surprise when they brought out a chocolate cake for me for my birthday. i think my speech consisted of "uh, well, this is a surprise..."

A cultural restoration project - wow! If I ever find myself a travel/study sponsor, I'll be sure to visit Dwarika's (now that you've told us about it) and learn from their enterprise. Hmmm, makes me think it would be wonderful to study architecture, from a southeast asian perspective. What a journey through time that would be!
Did you visit the woodworkers' workshop? More photos, please!
